WinterFire is a fused glass panel and is a early example of the attempt to achieve subtle color gradations and design detail when using fused glass as a medium. Some color combinations react chemically and turn brown or black on contact. Consequently, many firings are necessary to shield one color from another by using a clear glass in between.

Some fused glass artists have achieved compositional design detail by painstakingly laying out glass frits or powders bit by bit much like a Buddhist monk's sand mandala.
